Paul Conway created the topic: HORIZON : What Happened Before the Big Bang (BBC4)
I recently recorded and just watched this episode of 'Horizon' entitled 'WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE BIG BANG?' and if any of you out there are interested in such subjects then I would highly recommend it to you, search the BBC4 channel for a possible repeat or perhaps find it on BBC I player ?
So some 13.7 Billion Years ago (Wow! that's a long time ago) OUR Universe or so the story goes came into being and it's been getting bigger ever since (probably held in place by Dark Energy) but just what is it expanding into? or is it like a balloon creating it's own space as it expands?
This expansion is called 'inflation' (akin to a balloon being blown up somewhat) but now possibly 'internal inflation' which was explained here kinda tongue in cheek as a swiss cheese (you know the one's with the holes) and some believe we are like one of these pockets of air in such a cheese which is made up of numerous other pockets of course (= other universes along side ours)
Not sure about this theory but interesting.
There were 2 other interesting theories...
Our Universe might have come about thanks to a brain like structure...this is similar to the theory mentioned in another Horizon programme in which it described our universe coming about by dense energy that escaped and shall we say dropped off from it and ignited to create our home.
The one I found most interesting as it's one I've mentioned previously concerned 'Black Holes'
It seems there is a black hole at the centre of each galaxy (don't you think that strange? if true?)
And one scientist proposed a scenario similar to one i'd suggested...why are they there? and might they lead to another universe altogeather?
He suggests that within such a black hole another universe might be created? how we might be able to travel there if true is anyone's guess but perhaps one day.
The Big Bang...Something from Nothing...if you think about that it's rather crazy! don't you think?
In which case what was there to create the big bang? how long did it stick around before doing so? or was it deliberate? you know what i'm saying
It can't be ALL effect and NO cause right?
What did happen before the Big Bang? what existed before the Big Bang? there really could be many many Universes out there (think about that for a moment) would they be the same as ours? might the physics and chemistry be something completely different and alien to us? the likes of which we could not even comprehend right now...I've said it before but we don't know the half of it (or rather 1% of it)
SUPER PROGRAMME that makes you think.
"The Big Bang was a singularity in Space & Time, that means the very notion of time loses it's meaning" so says Professor Roger Penrose who believes if I got it right that he now believes in something else and that our universe may well cool off, go dark but may start up again.
Interesting and good to hear he's changed his mind...I always find it very interesting that intelligent people (scientists, professors and the like) do not think there was something before our Big Bang...even if ours was the first there had to be something there right? to ignite it.
Our Universe could be one of many (perhaps within our realm) but what of those that might exist out of our realm and in another unexplored dimension?
And if we were not the first universe to have been created how many have there been? or how many are there?
And just how old is TIME really? we will probably never know but i'd bet on it being a lot longer than 13.7 Billion Years
Was there EVER a Beginning to Everything? How could something have always been in existance with No beginning? that's really deep!
I think we live in a stranger place than we could ever have imagined...and I hope we stick around long enough to mature, get cleverer and explore all these places.
Well I hope someone reads this and finds it all as exciting and interesting as I
