For some reason I had always considered the drill as going downwards into the basalt - but in this illustration (I think from the 1950s) the drill is going sideways.
Image comes from "By Space Ship to the Moon" by Jack Coggins and Fletcher Pratt, forwrad by Willy Ley.It was published in London by Purnell in their"Publicity Products" imprint by arrangement with Random House NY. sorry but there is no date.
