Paul Conway created the topic: The Begining & End of the Universe (BBC4)
A good programme this & very well presented by Professor Jim Al-Khalili.

It always makes me smile when people say time began when our universe came into being as I think there might be many universes out there and when did they come into being? (if they did)

Some very interesting questions were brought up towards the end of this first of two programmes.
I'm sure they are one's many of you have discussed and wondered about...

There must have been something before the BIG BANG right? otherwise how did it come about?

What was this thing? was it a fluke of nature with atoms colliding and bringing forth our universe?
Where has this other place gone? or is it still with us somewhere? mixed in with our matter?

How long had whatever it was that created our universe been around? (before creating ours) time maybe more strange than we can possibly imagine?

If it wasn't atoms colliding that created us and our universe then what might it have been? GOD? certainly any beings that could create such a thing might be considered as so but if you watched the episode you'll have seen we are getting mighty clever (CERN)

How can so much matter come from such a little thing? almost like MAGIC.

Just what is our universe expanding into? really?

Are there multi universe's? i think so (no evidence of course...just a gut feeling...i'm NOT sure we know 1% of what's out there really) and even stranger still possible multi dimensional universes that exist on another plane altogether and might those places (if they exist have a whole different type of science? energy? and matter?)

The old Tv Signals that had no channels...REMEMBER them? that's evidence of the BIG BANG...strange huh?

Looking forward to part 2 which will focusing on the possible ending of the Universe?
Could it all come back together again as it started...will it simply continue to expand? will it slow down? with the stars slowly dying out in all parts of our universe? in which case could we have DARK UNIVERSE'S out there somewhere?

WHAT A STRANGE PLACE we were BORN INTO...I wonder if we'll ever learn these answers & even more which we haven't even thought up yet.

VERY SAD DAY YESTERDAY...NOT surprised...they've achieved NOTHING...HOLD TIGHT BELGUIM.

This BEAUTIFUL Piece of Music kinda summed up my SOMBRE mood yesterday :(

Paul Conway replied the topic: The Begining & End of the Universe (BBC4)
A quick(ish) follow up to Part 1's 'The Beginning', i just watched the recording last night for Part 2's 'The End' and if anything it was even more interesting...This is for those that either cannot see it (not in the UK) or don't plan on seeing it (If you have it it recorded or intend to watch the repeat then DON'T READ on)

Ok...

We might not ever find out how our universe was created (perhaps if there are intelligent species out there somewhere they might know? and may one day let us in on the secret) but how will it all end?

Our universe is still expanding at an even greater speed than was expected (but expanding into what? does it create it's own kind of bubble? with the dark energy holding it all in place?)

As was seen in the programme there have been some wonderfully clever & inventive people in the past...women were given a bad rap judging by this programme.

'Critical Density' will possibly determine how our universe might end.

It was thought that our universe did not have the mass (stars, planets etc) available for it to continue expanding and that due to this it may one day collapse in on it's self once a certain point had been reached...but along came 'Dark Energy' which takes up approx 70% of our universe (AMAZING! especially as we can't see it and still don't know what it is? and what it's made from?) this dark energy now takes us above this critical density which means it will likely NOT collapse but is more likely to continue expanding outwards.

The galaxies, planets and sun's getting further and further away, many of these planets will then due to the sun's dying out (having used up all of their energy) be engulfed with perhaps a few rogue planets surviving in darkness? but ALL the Stars and Lights will eventually go out :(

Possibly the only real thing left of our universe might be this Dark Energy? how long will that continue? the dark force holding all our galaxies, planets and sun in place (Darth Vader has a lot to answer for :P )

Don't get too depressed though, because if we (humans or whatever it is that we might have become by that time?) are still around? I'm sure we will have advanced to such a degree that we might almost be considered GODS or GOD like at that time with the ability to...
a) create our very own SUN, maybe even GALAXIES or wow! why not go the whole hog and create a UNIVERSE? (perhaps we created ourselves? :cheer: ) but if this is too much maybe we'll be advanced enough to...
b) Depart this Universe and reach another one and we simply jump from one to another?
This would assume we are not as silly as we are now and haven't destroyed ourselves.

It's so far into the future that we most live in the now...but it would be interesting to see what awaits us in the very far future wouldn't it?

Dark Energy looks to have magical properties? if they don't know what it is then perhaps? maybe? it simply did come not from our Big Bang but from what was there before it? either that or the blast created this strange material.

A Super Programme this...HORIZON has been on a roll of late and i hope to see Professor Jim Al-Khalili present more of them in the future.

BEAM me up SCOTTY :woohoo:
