Probably an obvious answer to this (including because the sun has set) but when I look up at the sky on a clear night I can see countless stars. There will also be even more countless stars that I can't see. So why is the sky mostly black and not white? Why is it dark at night and not bright seeing as there are all these stars giving out light?

Space is black (at least to our eyes) & the stars are way too far away to shine any real light upon us apart from as
we see them as pin pricks of light.
I think it's as simple as that Martin.

Where does all the light go though?

I am thinking too much :-)

Always good to think Martin :)
Where does it go? these suns are simply too far away to have any real light up effect on us so what you see
really is what you get Martin which is a good sight in itself...Can you imagine if we didn't have any pin points of light!

When we look up and see those lights we know that in all likelihood there are planets orbiting them and who know's
what's on those planets? it's quite sobering...now imagine NOT having any other sun's (lights) in our night sky :-(

Hi! The question you're asking is also known as Olber's paradox. It's resolved by considering the fact that the universe has a finite age and the speed of light is also finite. The sky is not completely bright at night because light from the most distant stars (beyond what we call the observable universe) has not had time to reach us yet!

Ahhh, that answers the question I think. To be fair I didn't articulate it very well.

Now I know what it's called Laurence, Wikipedia has been my friend. Wiki
