Terrific ENTERTAINMENT this & highly recommended.
I normally wait & pick up these Blu Ray's much cheaper than the Supermarket prices but sometimes (perhaps once every 1 or 2 months) there is a TITLE I just can't wait to see...and this was such a title.
If you have a 3D set up it should be worth the extra £2 & you get a rather nice Slipcover with raised embossed lettering but also when the light hits it (and I only noticed this later tonight) Kong's EYES kinda LIGHT UP along with the Green SMOKE...COOL!
So yeah, watch it last night on the official day of release and it's a BEAUTY.
SUPER CAST, COOL EFFECTS, a GOOD DISCOVERY / ADVENTURE Story (Hollow Earth is mooted, Long Lost Civilizations & even a FUN line with regards to Alien / UFO folks )
It PLAYS OUT like a (and sorry for this ladies) a "BOYS OWN" Adventure Story except here we have a lady (Brie Larson is FUN) & this film is really rather FUNNY & TONGUE in CHEEK at times...I mean it's a HUGE 'Giant Monkey' film!!!
Samuel L. Jackson plays SLJ as only S.L. Jackson can but this time he's gone all Marlon Brando in 'Apocalypse Now' on us he's really fun to watch!
John C. Reilly is a huge reason WHY this film is so much FUN.
Can anyone out there REMEMBER the brilliant OTT (Over the Top) 1970's Edgar Rice Burrough's 'DOUG McCLURE' ADVENTURE Films?
They had some of the BEST, GREATEST POSTER ART Ever!!! the likes of which you just DON'T SEE TODAY & the FILMS themselves? well they actually TRIED to MATCH the POSTERS but just ended up a little short but again BLESS THEM they were & still are GREAT FUN & I speak of ALL 4 he made...
THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT
AT THE EARTH's CORE
WARLORDS of ATLANTIS
and
THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT...he wasn't in this one too much though!
Well this film KONG Skull Island has something of these films VIBE about it but done better & with the addition of KONG himself who is BRILLIANT HERE (you can tell this CREATURE has an INTELLIGENCE & is THOUGHTFUL, even CARING!)
There is a scene in which it's NIGHT TIME & well you'll see when you see it...IT IS BEAUTIFUL.
I'm a HUGE fan of the 1933 original film which although it was in Black & White & had a STOP MOTION King Kong & FAY WRAY instead of the more modern women as seen here with the feisty & wonderful Brie Larson I have to say it still holds up rather well to this day!
Clearly dated when compared to this! WHAT WILL WE HAVE in another 50-100 Years time (well I think we are already getting close to the point where you will be able to step into the movie either by using the 3D headsets we have now or Hologram tech that will PLACE YOU RIGHT IN THE MOVIE as the STAR making choices, fending off critters & trying to work stuff out...NOW THAT's GOING to be REAL GOOD FUN!)
I will ALWAYS love the original 1933 KING KONG...the later remake 1976 had Jeff Bridges (always a good thing) & the STUNNING movie debut of Jessica Lange but the REST was hokey & silly, still FUN but not a patch on that or the rest to follow including Peter Jackson's valiant attempt (ONLY PROBLEM with that was the some 1 hour or so getting to the ACTION & ADVENTURE)
THIS FILM ticks many boxes & I think some of you folks out there are going to LOVE IT.
Worth buying off the bat (and NOT waiting?) you BET your .... .... it is
I think PASSENGERS was my last RETAIL full price BUY but this 'KONG' is the better picture (which is saying something because I LOVE SPACE stuff) previous to that 'ROGUE ONE' which I already think is an UNDER-RATED Classic!
When you finally see it ENJOY & LAUGH ALONG with it...LOVED that giant Spider!

This is for anyone that might be wondering about the HOKEY but wonderfully ENTERTAINING Doug McClure Movies I mentioned.
I think "THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT" hit cinema's in 1975 so I would be 7years old...the PERFECT AGE for such stuff & here's the POSTER I studied for what seemed like hours (probably just 5 minutes) displayed outside of the cinema...AH THEY DON'T CREATE WORKS of MOVIE ART like this anymore (SADLY) today it would be dear DOUG's FACE CLOSE UP and a real photo of a SUB in the background
NOW THIS....THIS is WHAT I CALL True MOVIE POSTER ART.
Wonderful TOM CHANTRELL Artwork (British artist that did many of the Movie Posters I LOVED from this Era, the 1970's & 80's)
RARE & Almost Impossible to FIND in GOOD condition & if you do I think this one is around £400 or $500 & worth every PENNY.
I think the 2nd film from DOUG & the TEAM paired him up with the quiet WONDERFUL & CHARMING man 'PETER CUSHING' he was nothing like the man you saw in the HAMMER Horror movies, actually here he played a bit of a dithery, old professor type & quiet WONDERFULLY I might add.
The films is "AT THE EARTH's CORE" 1977 I think so by this time I was 9 so Caroline Munro would be interesting me somewhat too
Oh and I LOVED that MOLE they used...I wonder if we will EVER have anything like this? so that we can go see?
Here's the BRILLIANT POSTER...Mine as it happens

Again Tom Chantrell Artwork, NOT as good as the LAND THAT TIME FORGOT Poster but still engaging & far better than ANY that can be seen today in Cinema's for the most part (there are still the odd exceptions even today...GOTG Vol 2 for one)

I think the next in the series of DOUG McClure Action Adventure / Discovery films was this one entitled...
"WARLORDS of ATLANTIS" 1978 (yup by this time I think they were proving VERY POPULAR in the UK especially to lads like me at the time)
If only because of the name alone I nagged my Dad to take me to see it, we did & I LOVED IT & still do to this day!
Here's another thing you don't really get to much of these days? if ever either on POSTERS now taglines & word play...
"From the Depth of Space they Came to VANISH beneath the Sea..." so when I read this & saw the POSTER I had to go & see it & fair do's this film as with the others really does kinda live up to the POSTERS...Kudo's to the Makers.
You have a ship of bandits, a DIVING BELL attacked by an old Nessie like Monster, a HUGE OCTOPUS that attacks the ship whilst DOUG & the Captain (a jolly good turn by Peter Gilmour) are gone, the ATLANTEAN Robot types with the SPOOKY FACE Masks, you can see our 3 HERO's including the BEAUTIFUL DAMSEL in Distress (I even have the brilliantly staged & posed for original PRESS STILL showing her posing with the OCTOPUS from the film, if you get the chance you MUST SEARCH IT OUT...If someone was desperate to see it & asked kindly then I would do so) in the background we have the LOST CITY of ATLANTIS....hmmm
And over there bottom left that wonderful HUGE Lizard like Creature from the film....these were FUN FILMS just like KONG which reminded me so very much of these.
Chantrell Artwork yet again I believe? and WONDERFUL to BEHOLD.

And the LAST they EVER MADE & Number 4 in the series of Edgar Rice Burroughs Adventure novels made into movies.
This one was called "THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT"
Yup they went back to the very 1st one but it's still as FUN & every bit as GOOD as that first film, sadly I think perhaps DOUG was pretty much through making them but he shows up for around 10 minutes near the end.
THIS BRITISH UK 30x40" POSTER is INCREDIBLE...a real beauty, it's almost 3 POSTERS in ONE.
To the left you have the USA 1 Sheet Poster Artwork which depicts PATRICK WAYNE (yup BIG JOHN's boy) along with DOUG (complete with beard now) & the shall we say curvy DANA GILLEPSIE ALL FENDING off the HORDES at the top of the Mountain, WONDERFUL but it GETS even BETTER in this MIDDLE SECTION...as we have an old WW1 like Bi-Plane taking on a Teradactayl in mid-air (NO it's not quiet as exciting as depicted here but it's a nice try) & the poster ends over on this right hand side & along the bottom with something a bit like the first poster (DINOSAURS, VOLCANOES & the like)
Chantrell didn't always sign his posters but it again has his work written all over it...CHANTRELL's POSTERS had a certain LOOK to them.
It's FUNNY Really because I would RATE the POSTERS differently to the MOVIES.
Personally, I would say my FAVOURITE POSTERS here are...
1) THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT...This is for me ONE of the ALL TIME 'GREAT' POSTERS! (3rd)
2) THE PEOPLE THAT FORGOT...the sequel but PLANES & Teradactals instead of SUBMARINE & T-Rex...NOT much in too be honest. (4th)
3) WARLORDS of ATLANTIS...Gets the nod for 3rd best Poster but in todays world NOTHING would BEAT this. (2nd)
4) AT THE EARTH's CORE...Wonderful Artwork, Highly effective & whilst I LOVE the MOLE & that right hand side with the characters I just feel this left hand side was a little rushed (surprisingly given it was CHANTRELL's hand) (1st)
The MOVIES I prefer in ORDER are given at the end in BRACKETS....but in truth as with the POSTERS there is very little difference ALTHOUGH I do think the LAND THAT TIME FORGOT poster is EXCEPTIONAL & the BEST film is the one which teams him up with PETER CUSHING & CAROLINE MUNRO.
