Paul Conway created the topic: GREATEST 5 MOVIE STREAK ?
Being a MOVIE GEEK i LOVE IMDB but this is a HARD POLL to CALL (although apparently NOT as Christopher Nolan is leading it by MILES)
The GREATEST 5 Movie STREAK by a DIRECTOR.
So of the 35 listed i had it down to a shortlist of 8 (many others i LOVE here like SPIELBERG, EASTWOOD & Christopher NOLAN) but they were sadly rejected for this 8 due to the fact that some of these 5 were NOT their best...We are looking for the director with THE BEST 5 films made in a ROW!
Difficult Choice...
Alfred HITCHCOCK (The Wrong Man, Vertigo, North by North West, Psycho & The Birds) BLIMEY!!! MOST of his GOODIES are HERE!
James CAMERON (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, T2 & True Lies) NOW that is a GREAT RUN
John CARPENTER (Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween , The Fog, Escape from New York & The Thing)
Stanley KUBRICK (Dr Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon & The Shining) There is one here i'm not a fan of (still LOOKS GREAT)
Rob REINER (Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men) THOSE first 3 are AWESOME!
Matthew VAUGHAN (Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, X Men FIRST CLASS & Kingsman) LOVE the last four.
Woody ALLEN (Sleeper, Love & Death, Annie Hall, Interior & Manhattan) DAMN! if only a few more of his 1970's comedies had been here!
Tim BURTON (Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns & Ed Wood)
LOVE 'EM ALL but hard choices needed to be made...so Kubrick OUT i nearly gave it to him just for 2001 but that's CHEATING! but that one film is almost the equal to ANY 5 of the others! YUP it's THAT GOOD.
LOVE NOLAN's FILMS too but he didn't even make my shortlist (that may have been a mistake?) Modern Audiences forget how good the oldies were! it would seem his run continues with DUNKIRK, yeah maybe he should have made my 8?
In the end for me...it came down to 3 (and it's near on impossible to separate them...except for 1 THING) so in...
3rd & i love The WRONG MAN too BUT change that to the AMAZING 'Rear Window' & HITCHCOK WINS! so he's 3rd.
2nd James CAMERON...my ERA, brought up on these films from a TEEN.
I was just too young to see TERMINATOR in the cinema (but caught up with it on old VHS & it blew me away!)
My first 18 certificate was 'ALIENS' and that is a simply INCREDIBLE Sequel to 'Alien' could not believe what i'd seen!
The Abyss is often forgotten (IF YOU SEE IT...go for the LONGER VERSION, the original THEATRICAL version was BADLY EDITED & CUT, the longer version EXPLAINS many reasons WHY they have SHOWN UP & the ED HARRIS scenes are pivotal) a SUPER FILM.
T2 (Terminator 2) super story, amazing effects, Arnie on song, the kid is great & LINDA HAMILTON!!!
True Lies is James Cameron's JAMES BOND film with ARNIE with tongue in cheek moments! remember seeing this in the cinema too & the scene at the end with the HARRIER JUMP JET is stunning!
So as you can see CAMERON is close to my heart & although incredibly schmaltzy i do like 'TITANIC' went to see that in the cinema by myself & like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN i'm glad no one was say close to me as i sobbed like a damn baby when JACK died.
Just wish he wasn't focusing ALL HIS TIME on these 'AVATAR' sequels...GREAT as that film was i'd prefer to see directors try different things! but we'll see perhaps they'll be amazing?
So HAVE you GUESSED...Yup my NUMBER ONE is very CLOSE to my HEART, he's a MAVERICK, he did incredible things with LOW BUDGETS, i have pretty much all of these FILM POSTERS (except for Assault on P13) but i do have better one's with BIG TROUBLE in LITTLE CHINA & THEY LIVE so i'm ok with it even though i LOVE Assault.
YES it's JOHN CARPENTER that got my VOTE.
I remember seeing Assault on Precinct 13 (again on old VHS) at my friends house & we just couldn't get over how COOL this thing was (of course we later discovered Carpenter LOVED westerns & it was his tribute to FORT BRAVO)
HALLOWEEN is just a very CLEVER Horror Film & it still works all these years later! i always think the Ghost Bed Sheet scene is Chiling!
THE FOG is one of my favourite ALL-TIME HORROR FILMS, Father Malone portrayed by the wonderful character actor HAL HALBROOK is spot on "We're celebrating Murderers" BLAKE & his GHOSTLY Crew are brilliant! perhaps the only Horror film to come close is "FRIGHT NIGHT" (BOTH will be on my HALLOWEEN viewing list)
Escape from New York...who else but John Carpenter could make such a wonderfully quirky film, President of the United States is brought down within the area now a open air prison (district of New York) & they have to send in SNAKE who has hours to get him & get out, the supporting cast is perfect!
The Thing...HOW WELL DONE is THIS!!! too many interesting scenes to mention!
He also made as i said BIG TROUBLE in LITTLE CHINA, THEY LIVE, DARK STAR, Prince of Darkness (wasn't sure about this one on my first viewing but with more it gets better & better & more SCARY!)
Only thing i would say about John Carpenter is that he gave his blessing for the remakes (RUBBISH!!! Halloween's & The Fog is a disgrace!!!) and even said he didn't care so long as the cheques rolled in....ARGHHH, ok, i do understand! he probably didn't get paid too much back in those days so now's his time for reaping the rewards for these CLASSIC Sci-Fi / Horror pictures & apparently there is talk again of another remake with "Escape from New York" next on the cards!!! NOOOOOOO there is ONLY 1 Snake Plissken & that's the ULTRA COOL 'Kurt Russell'
Head over & try and pick from this little lot (NOT EASY) but i grew up on JOHN CARPENTER Films & each & everyone of these & more are SPOT ON.
