Paul Conway created the topic: Asteroid 3200 Phaethon (Another WOW...)
This is that asteroid that passed by us late in December of this year.
I have heard or seen nothing of it since, surprisingly, considering all the camera's, sats & what have you up there but HEY at least we are still here
Found this on 3200 Phaethon, it's rather technical I won't pretend to say I understand everything here but if you have a little time & work your way down it you will DISCOVER a number of interesting things...
The clear & obvious one is the WOW... similar to that written in that radio telescope margins from the 1970's but this of course refers to how close this thing will come to EARTH in the year 2093 on December 14 (it seems to show up close to Earth during DECEMBER which is a little curious right?) also curious is how spaced out the encounters with EARTH are...ranging from 100 year gap early on 1631 down to just 10 years most of the time...WHY such a difference? perhaps I should look into this myself as there are no experts here to answer this but I thought it curious that this asteroid seems to slow up? or speed up? or take a different course? can't think of another reason why it would change so? well I can but I better not say
So on that date 14 Dec 2093 it will come as close as .019810 & at the side of this is that WOW...
If I have these calculations right this year on the 16th it came as close as .068932 it says here but I remember them (NASA) saying it would come as close as 6 million miles to Earth (some said less) but it looks like NASA were right, I don't remember spotting in the Night Sky but then again it was only reading 11th magnitude so just going outside I was never likely to see it.
My guess is that .019810 would equate to just under 2 million miles close to EARTH so I suppose that deserves a WOW right?
"Potentially Hazardous" & discovered by NASA's Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) got me interested.
Phaethon is an optically-dark B-class object...again interesting but they say brighter than expected.
I'm sorry but my imagination sparks when I read such things, probably perfectly innocent but with JPL being one of those secretive types who knows? I figured the ROSETTA Mission was just one INCREDIBLE mission to hunt down, catch, orbit a COMET & then take pictures, analyse it & then send Philae down there for closer shots...I DID NOT EXPECT for THEM (ESA) to capture a super huge SPACECRAFT (unconnected with the ROSETTA Mission) to be captured in one of these photographic shots, so you'll pardon me whilst I ponder a little on this one too.
Like I say, not seen any photo's yet of this but i'll see what I can find now Christmas is over.
Here's the link to this interesting information on 3200 Phaethon.

GOOD READING.

Yup to be fair LOOKS just like one might expect a LARGE round ROCK in Space.
COMET 67P is FAR MORE interesting.
Still, at least I got to see it finally & so shall you folks (of course all you had to do is head to that link & click the other link at the bottom of this page...SILLY ME, my teachers always said I did some of the difficult things ok or well but FORGOT the basic/easy stuff)
