Alternatives to Digi Me for Digital Memory?

Hi StanE, welcome aboard.

You don't have to worry about getting it done in time. We are 10 years away from launch, so plenty of time. I'm sure the technology will change so much that there will be as yet unknown ways to gather your data for the capsule. If you would like to start now, just make a folder on your PC and start adding bits and pieces you'd like to add. You can start now and keep adding and adjusting for years until it needs to be ready. Enjoy!

The experts I'm sure, are working on all sorts of alternatives :)

I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. [/size]

I hope we are NOT 10 years away Stavy :-)
It's been one year already nearly so I make it just the 9 now...they're passing quickly already.

Been away from the site for a month or so (horrible month for me & my family) but not too much has changed with regards to new people, topics & subjects (great redesign and upgrade though and will look forward to uploading our first material later in the year)

I'd like to know what our numbers are upto now? as we approach the 1 year anniversary (I wonder if anything special is in the works for this anniversary?) also wonder what LM's had envisaged we'd be upto by now? double the members? if so then we should be around the 15,000 mark now?

I was also a little surprised (and worried) by reading the Prizes for the Send yourself to the Moon Competition...

1st a Digital Memory Box worth $1000 (200mb of Data!!!)
2nd ditto worth $500 (100mb)
3rd ditto worth $250 (50mb)

Great freebie competition for the young 'uns but if the values here are matching those fees we've paid then even 50mb would be much lower than I'd expected especially with memory now getting cheaper and for more capacity...I figured by the year 2024 it might not be too crazy to think each person would have been given 1GB or half this (500mb) but look at the price of that top prize with only 200mb of storage!!!

I'm hoping we aren't pricing many out of this great mission?

I guess I'd just like to get to that point where our mission was fully funded and we know it's a certain go...rather than no go....again probably worrying needlessly as we're in good hands.

To be fair to Digi.me it clearly states that it saves everything you do locally (on your pc) and doesn't upload anything to them (unless you tell it to)

digi.me/privacy

Worth snooping around in the install directory though I didn't find anything specific that might be my entries, I'm too tired to look.

Install directory by default should be this unless you saved it somewhere else. social safe being its old name.

C:\Program Files (x86)\SocialSafe\SocialSafe files

My thought too at first. Couple of things to consider though, firstly data compression. I don't know it works or how extensive it can be but data can be compressed significantly already, ever opened a zipped or archived folder? they often need extracting before you can use whatever is inside because it has been compressed (so your file download size isn't too high). Say my digital archive was 1GB it could perhaps be compressed into 100MB, or perhaps by 2024 10MB?

Also these are top prizes for a competition so the rewards will be high value. I doubt a £60 pledge like mine would get me 50MB but if the high compression is true then I may not need it. Perhaps 500MB of data we make (text and medium resolution images) could be compressed into 10MB?

To clarify I don't actually know anything about compression, the figures are just guesses, but I'm pretty sure compression will happen in LM1 and that the technology to compress data more and more will get better over the years.

But I think this not really knowing how much data we get and how much it will be worth is genuinely because there's so much to take into account. They will have questions like how much can we store? how many people can we sell it to? how much should we give? (because if they don't give each person enough there may be loads of space at the end, or if they give us too much they may fill up with many more potential customers not being able to buy any,) It's a complex issue but yeah so far I suppose if we do the maths £60 could give us 10MB or 20MB maybe but it's what we can do with that 10 or 20 that matters.

It's unlikely in the extreme that compression technology will be improved, ever. The theoretical basis of information compression was worked out long ago, primarily by Claude Shannon, and we are more-or-less at the limit. Don't expect any real improvements.

Fawkes...At first i thought great prize but then i realised as you say that this might mean our original pledges for a Memory Box (most of us, some 2859 backers that pledged £60 or approx. $90) will get what looks to be between 15mb-30mb only or approx 1-2 minutes of 1080p HD video footage!!! of course you could get more if you drop the quality!

Don't get me wrong I'm delightfully happy to be a part of this unique, fun & exciting mission but I did always wonder what it was we kickstarter's were buying back then, I suppose I took a guess (I figured at around 100-200mb) as well as the inclusion of 1 strand of hair dna.

Right now I'm not really sure this true?

Under the 'Space Store' Go to the Moon tab you'll find a number of different packages including what looks to be "Memory Box Voucher - LM1 2024" which I take it to be mine and a majority of those other original kickstarter backers...I think a few of those like me will be disappointed to find that it has only bought them one or the other (either a small amount of data or a strand of dna)

I am surprised as I'm sure I'd read that both were included over at the Kickstarter...

The closest package I can see to the £60/$90 mark here is the $100 package which offers 30mb of Data and 1 year Club Membership, (well I know all those original kickstarters that paid the £60/$90 has or should have a lifetime membership which is cool but only 30mb of Data (only a minute or two of HD footage) and No DNA hair strand is very surprising to me!

I guess the 2 most interesting packages are for...
$150 it gives you 30mb of Data (still incredibly low i feel) plus 1 dna sample that would be lumped in with many others? if I'm reading the next one below right?
An upgrade for this one above is going to cost an extra $60 but I honestly thought this is what all those kickstarters were getting (well with the addition of an extra 70-170mb of Data)

$250 gets 30mb of Data (again) and 1 identifiable dna hair sample??? in which case does this mean it gets it own individual capusule?

HAS ANYONE USED THEIR MEMORY BOX VOUCHER Yet? so that they might be able to clear it up for others?
I understand LM's didn't know at the time...so could not commit and also know they're hoping for millions to help fund this Mission but I also thought all those $90 kickstater pledges would have been rewarded with the DATA & DNA package I thought I was getting and that the amount of storage would be more than just the 30mb!

Hope it doesn't come across as a huge moan :-) as that's not really me but I must admit to being a little disappointing when I realised (from this competition) that the data storage was going to be far lower than anticipated and that NO dna sample is also included for the Kickstarters, Argghhh, that is unless this MEMORY BOX VOUCHER at $90 is special and DOES include this???

I'm probably not going to download anything until after Christmas but if it's only around this 30mb I guess it's mainly going to be photo's with perhaps brief video clip or two.

As for compression...Personally I think this would be a mistake unless the software is included on LM1 otherwise those that eventually unearth this might not be able to open it up? Just a Thought.

IF ANYONE OUT THERE could let me KNOW what the Kickstarters that pledged the £60/$90 MEMORY BOX will get I'd be most grateful and can then plan (I'm still hoping the DNA strand is included with this package as that's what I'd told my father when giving it to him last Christmas)

STILL one of the GREATEST of ALL MISSIONS this...especially with other parts of the mission yet to be disclosed :-)
